Egan isnt especially interested in spinning out all the potential ramifications of the Collective Consciousness, which are considerable and bit distracting. How did you get from there to the first book? I did not think it while looking at Twitter! I feel like I am more myself on the page than I am any other way. And I thought, If this material can affect me this way, there has to be a book there. It was only a matter of time before someone made them pay for what they thought they were getting for free. Its not polemical. It was carefully written to run that way, but I didnt realize it when you first sent it to me, in 2012. Im the opposite of an autofiction writer, thats for sure. So I felt uniquely ill-qualified to do that work, and the way that that manifested itself was that the writing felt really dead. And the device I eventually came up with allowed me to do a lot of things. I was so alone. Im thinking about one of the chapters in The Candy House, Lulu the Spy, 2032; it started as the story Black Box, which ran on the New Yorker Fiction Twitter feed as a series of tweets. I love Don DeLillo. And then we go back into his adventure, which we are watching alongside her, from his point of view, and she solves a mystery while reliving that day with usshe gets an answer to the question of what changed her father. No, I had started getting little bits of positive reinforcement. But theyre good stories, and Im enjoying them. I was devastated. So I think my house would have to be covered with hard candy: shiny, delicious nonfood. Theres another one that Im hoping to publish first, which Im a little stuck on, but Im still hammering away. And I guess the challenge always with structure is to find the story that requires that particular structure. So I sent him this new one, The Stylist. I remember this vividly. But there are lots of other great crime stories. We have an Encyclopdia Britannica collection still! So that was Dan accepting the story. I had sent things to The New Yorker, and they would always come back with a form letter. Oh, yes. Dostoyevsky was someone I really loved at an earlier age. But at least Id have got some work done. So I had no words to understand what was happening to me. But you could only read aloud. When did it first occur to you that writing might be what youd do with your life? I think theres probably a little bit too much of my research in that book. I find myself thinking more and more about how a good crime book works and why. This is the guy who has made everyone searchable to everyone else, essentially, and yet his own memory feels off limits to him, and he finds that unacceptable, so he goes on to invent this device called Own Your Unconscious, which allows people to externalize their memories. Most young people think theyre the center of the universe, and you thought you were a shadow person. So I read English literature, which was fantastic, because I had been an English major at Penn at the time when literary theory was predominant. And it was so exciting to feel that happen. But every time I gave myself permission to do that I found that I kept returning to the environment as I had researched and imagined it: Second World War New York, the technical details of deep-sea diving with the equipment of the nineteen-thirties and forties, shipbuilding, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, merchant sailing. But my feeling is always: Why not try to do all of it and more? And, on that trip to Europe, I started having panic attacks, which I had never heard of. But, yes, it is amazing that in my first novel, The Invisible Circus, I was already reaching for the things that interest me now. Phoebe sees her sister as having been real and herself as being kind of a shadow person. It was definitely one of the most difficult first-draft writing experiences that Ive had. But I will say that I worry about what happens when theres no more solitude, because, without it, Im not sure if I would ever have figured out any of the things that have made my life great, you know? It was more interesting. So I will write a first draft and then look at it more critically and ask myself whether the form will continue to serve what Im doing. The Collective Consciousness is the product of a company named Mandala, founded by Bix Bouton, the protagonist of the first chaptera charismatic entrepreneur whose genius lay in refining, compressing, and mass-producing, as a luscious, irresistible product, technology that already existed in crude form. Hes a bit Mark Zuckerberg, a bit Steve Jobs, except Bix is Black, first drawn into the world of the internet by the belief that, when disembodied, Black people would be delivered from the hatred that hemmed and stymied them in the physical world. Bixs first big idealifted from an obscure anthropology monograph containing algorithms that calculated how trust and influence formed in a Brazilian tribewas a social media platform that made him rich and famous. Well, it was interesting, when imagining people using the machine, to think about what that would really mean. But I also thought I was a mentally ill person, and was going to spend my life in institutions. I started in his fiction class, and then we did an independent study. She was an inspiration for Agatha Christie and a very successful novelist in her day. Its packed with ideas, it offers brutal social commentary, and yet its hard to say exactly what that commentary is. So its always trial and error. What I love so much about writing journalism is that it gives me license to go marching out into the world and ask people all kinds of things and be the nosy busybody that I really am. I think probably the best whodunnit Ive ever readcertainly, contemporaryis Presumed Innocent. Theres psychological richness, its very hard to guess who the culprit is, and its heavy on atmosphere. So its a deeply uncomfortable process, always, but just essential for me, because at the beginning I dont always know what Im trying to do, and when I ultimately do know what Im trying to do I dont know if Im doing it, and I like to find out while I still have time to close the gap. I was at a nine-hour time difference from my home, and my home itself was breaking up. And then more contemporary people: I was a huge admirer of Robert Stone. I think my failure ratio is higher with this kind of book than with any other. . It allowed time travel within the book. He had these thoughts, and they are painful for Charlie to witness. Theyd lost interest, so it was time to stop. I havent read him in quite a while. Egan thinks otherwise, maintaining that knowing everything is too much like knowing nothing; without a story, its all just information. Forming it into a narrative is living (even if, as with Didion, the story you tell about yourself is that youre a neurasthenic cynic above such consolations). Instagram, Twitter and TikTok can monopolize all of your time, driven by what the novelist Jennifer Egan calls humankinds ongoing hunger for authenticity.. But Im very glad that I had the little experience with it that I did because it was extremely useful in thinking about image culture and what it is to be an object. He went on this adventure in the California woods, where he smoked marijuana and got a sense of a cultural change that was imminent, and he returned home having basically decided to walk away from the conventional life hed made for himself and his family. Like so many crime novels of the fifties, sixties, and seventies, theyre very dated. I wish I knew their full names and could find out who they are and where they are now. But I was physically in a place that so much of the publishing world was moving through, and that was kind of wild. So that was a major career leap, although, as with every career leap I have experienced, there was a kind of difficult aftermath. Of course, the show was taped. That sounds so weird. Theres no, you know, not quite having time and sort of fudging it slightly, or fixating on little things instead of big things. Lin-Manuel Miranda goes in search of lost time. I had never heard of her, but Ive read a number of her books now. It gets very hard because of the sexism, but I think I may try. My curiosity tended to be applied to the characters who are the most opaque in Goon Squad, characters who seem almost dispensable, because theyre so minor; that automatically made me curious, because, of course, there are no minor characters in real life. I reached a point where I just couldnt go on. You said that you dont write about yourself or people you know in fiction. So I did that. This was a strange interlude in my life. Well, I always think of antibiotics. I really think of arriving at Penn as the beginning of being me. The Collective Consciousness offers something very appealing, but it also has a dark side, and Im wondering if you surprised yourself with the manifestations of the technology in the book. Ive thought about trying to teach it. But, honestly, there were also people I wanted to write about but wasnt able to successfully. In youth hostels, I was thrown together with a couple of remarkable women whom Ill always remember. He appears basically in just one scene, and that is set in 1993, when, after partying all night with a couple of his N.Y.U. You know, there is a gigantic collective of information out there. Some of the students really loved it, but it felt very tricky to teach it. And I continue to be very interested in genre, so Im reading a lot of crime fiction. So I was writing the first chapter in that way, with a narrator who kept reminding the reader that, of course, it was actually the twenty-first century. Do you think that there is something inherent to your voice, no matter which book it is? I realize that Ive settled on a story of how it all happened, but sometimes I find myself wondering if it really did happen that way. But to go to college before having an answering machine and then to witness whats happened since has been absolutely staggering. It doesnt come easily to me. But Egan is after more than a cautionary tale; she is interested in describing social technology as a lived environment. Its so unreal in its coloration and so shiny and appealing.
